Our extension office moved into the old train depot building in the historic district of Covington. Any landscaping had to be approved by the city. In addition to filling the beds in the front of the building, three raised beds have been added. One raised bed will contain native plants, one bed will be maintained by the Master Gardener Interns, and the other bed currently holds herbs. There is a shade bed in the back of the building, along with a small bed containing Canna. A pollinator bed is planned for the Spring of 2025. Eventually there will be a woodland bed and a fragrance garden in the back of the building also.
Our initial goal was to have plants in before the open house.
We chose bushes and plants that would sustain the heat that would hit the front side of the building.
We planted Abelias and Petite Roses, along with a couple of holly bushes.
We have three raised beds. This is the herb bed.
The native plant raised bed.
Tomato plants, peppers, etc. are in the third raised bed.
The 2023 Interns created a rain barrel watering system to help water the beds.
Our pollinator bed will be made where a massive pile of bricks sits. We have worked for quite a while clearing up this spot. It's always nice to have a little help!
Our hydrangeas and astilbe we planted last year have started to come back. We also planted some tulips around the bird bath and other places, along with some daffodils. It will be exciting to see how this bed does this year.
Finally getting to the bottom of all the bricks.
Ready to till up the plot and start planting! Our 2025 Interns will be over this pollinator bed.
